Senior Pugs Are Getting A Second Chance!

We are thrilled to announce that we are a recipient of a 2026 Pathways Home Grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization. This funding will help us provide essential care for senior pugs in our rescue, including medical and dental care, and adoption readiness support that removes barriers to finding loving homes.

The Pathways Home Grant is part of Grey Muzzle's national effort to identify the most effective ways to help senior dogs move from shelters and rescues into adoptive, foster, or hospice homes. By participating in this program, we're helping identify proven solutions that can improve the lives of senior dogs nationwide.

MEET SALEM

Salem came to PRFG after her owner made an incredibly difficult and selfless decision. After fleeing an abusive situation, Salem’s mom found herself living in her car with Salem. She did everything she could to keep them together, but eventually realized the situation was not sustainable and that Salem was beginning to struggle. Giving Salem up was heartbreaking, but it was also an act of love. Her mom trusted us to give Salem the stability, care, and future she deserved, and we are honored to be part of their story.

Salem is 13 years old and weighs 20 pounds. She is up to date on vaccines, HW negative and spayed. Our vet says Salem is remarkably healthy for her age and basically won the genetic lottery.

Salem has a dental coming up in a couple of weeks which will be covered through our Grey Muzzle grant. Once that is behind her, she will be ready to begin looking for her happily ever after. You can learn more about Salem and apply to adopt HERE

MEET NILES

Niles, an 8 year old pug, was surrendered when his owner was expanding their family and no longer had enough time for him. We immediately helped Niles get all of his regular medical care updated and thanks to our Grey Muzzle grant he received a much needed dental surgery. When Niles arrived in rescue, we also discovered that he was experiencing hind-end weakness and mobility issues. Niles' hind-end weakness is believed to be caused by pug myelopathy, chronic IVDD, or possibly a cyst on his spine. The neurologist determined his condition is expected to be progressive, so his mobility may continue to decline over time. The recommended plan is supportive care focused on maintaining his comfort, mobility, and quality of life. Water therapy and acupuncture have been recommended to help strengthen his legs.

The wonderful new is that one of our previous PRFG had recently reached out to let us know they were interested in adopting again. They have a lot of experience with pugs experiencing hind-end weakness. As soon as we told them Nile's story they were in love! Since his adoption Niles has started a routine of physical/water therapy and he is doing very well. Most dogs with this condition are hard to find homes for, but Niles hit the jackpot and we are very happy for him and his new family.

MEET SMOOCH

Smooch is a sweet senior puggle girl who is happiest when she knows her people are nearby. She is easygoing, affectionate and generally low maintenance. Smooch came into rescue when her favorite person moved into an assisted living facility and could no longer care for her. Although her world has included some major changes, we are happy to help her find a home where she can enjoy her retirement years.

Smooch is an expert napper with occasional bursts of playful energy. She is most comfortable when her people are home and likes to keep track of where everyone is. She appears to be completely deaf. She does not respond to sounds, but she is attentive and responsive when she can see you. Smooch is also completely potty trained, and does well on walks and care rides.

Thanks to our Grey Muzzle grant, she will receive a much needed dental surgery after her skin, ears and UTI are cleared, If you would like to give Smooch a happy retirement home, learn more HERE.

MEET MILLIE

Millie is a 12-year-old sweetheart who is looking forward to spending her golden years as devoted pug pal and constant companion.

Millie is happiest napping, taking short strolls in a fenced yard, riding in the car, and making sure mealtimes happen right on schedule. She gets along well with other dogs and cats and thrives in a home where someone is around most of the day.

Like many senior pugs, Millie has a few age-related medical needs, including dry eye and breathing limitations. Thanks to our Grey Muzzle grant Millie received a much needed dental with some extractions. She also had several small lumps removed which were confirmed to be Mast Cell (all known masses were successfully removed and she has started on OTC anti-histamine meds). We are thrilled to report that Millie has been adopted by an amazing family who has a very long history with our rescue as volunteers, supporters, and more! Millie will enjoy lazy days surrounded by comfy beds, sunshine, and lots of love.
