Help us protect the hearts of the pugs who depend on us.

Every intake receives a full medical evaluation, including heartworm testing and prevention. Many arrive already heartworm + and others come to us unprotected and we make sure they never face that risk again.

HEART for Pugs is a dedicated fund to cover the cost of testing, prevention, and treatment for every rescue pug.

HEART for Pugs

Heartworm Education and Responsible Treatment

HEART for Pugs is our program to spread the word about heartworm prevention - because every squishy face deserves a healthy heart.

What are heartworms?

  • Parasites spread by mosquitoes
  • They live in the dog's heart, lungs, and blood vessels
  • Can cause coughing, fatigue, organ damage, and even death

Why Pugs Are Especially Vulnerable:

  • Florida & Georgia = mosquito paradise (but have been reported in all 50 states)
  • Pugs = already prone to breathing issues
  • Add Heartworms = a dangerous & deadly combo

Prevention Is Simple—and it saves lives.

  • Affordable monthly meds (less than $10 a dose) or 6-12 month injections
  • Annual testing by a veterinarian
  • Indoor dogs still need prevention - mosquitos don't knock!

HEART Tips for Pug Parents:

  1. Give preventatives on time, every time
  2. Never skip a dose—even just one can leave your pug vulnerable
  3. Schedule yearly heartworm tests with your vet

A healthy heart makes for a happy pug; keep yours protected!

American Heartworm Society

We are committed to preventing & treating heartworm disease.

Why Prevention Matters:

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by a parasitic worm (Dirofilaria immitis) that lives in the heart, lungs, and blood vessles of infected animals. It's spread through the bite of a single, infected mosquito - one bite can deposit larvae that migrate and mature inside the dog's body over several months.

Left untreated, heartworm disease causes severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs. Treatment is not only painful and risky, but also costly and requires months of strict rest to avoid life-threatening complications.

Our Rescue Protocol:

When a pug enters our rescue, they receive a full medical intake exam—including a heartworm test. Sadly, more than 50% of the pugs we help haven't received any vet care in the year before they come to us. That means no preventatives, no testing, and high risk for infection. To protect them, every pug in our care receives 6 months of heartworm prevention medication. While they're with us, we administer it monthly—and we send the remainder home with their new families upon adoption.

Adopters are also reminded when heartworm prevention medications are due each month, when to purchase more, and when to schedule annual heartworm testing.

Heartworm disease is preventable—but still far too common:

  • In 2025, 6 pugs tested heartworm positive upon intake to PRFG -- $11,297 total rescue investment in life saving care (monthly prevention meds & treatment).
  • So far In 2026, 2 fosters are undergoing heartworm treatment and our expenses have already passed $17,300 for heartworm prevention and treatment.

Treatment requires a long road of medication, vet visits, and strict crate rest.

Prevention? Just one chew a month or annual injection.

It’s simple: Prevention saves lives.

But not every pug comes to us protected. Your donation helps us provide lifesaving heartworm prevention to every foster—and critical treatment for those who arrive already infected.

Give the gift of a healthy heart—donate today to protect a pug in need.

Pookie

Pookie

Pookie

Pookie was rescued from a local animal shelter and is estimated to be around 2–3 years old. For such a young little guy, he came to us with a fairly big medical file - a slight arched back and no tear production in either eye, which has resulted in limited vision. Pookie is heartworm positive, and we quickly learned his fight for survival would be something we had never seen before. Read more of his story HERE

Cooper

Pookie

Pookie

Cooper joined us from a local shelter where he tested positive for heartworms. They started his heartworm treatment and transferred him to our care. He stayed with us for several months while he completed his treatment. Cooper is the best little pug boy and it was heartbreaking to know he will had to endure months of treatment. But at just 3 years old he stayed strong with the help of his foster family. Now Cooper is heartworm free and loving adventures and sunbathing with his new Dad.

Glenda

Pookie

Glenda

Glenda  joined our rescue when her owners were having a baby and could no longer care for her. We found out at her intake exam that not only is she heartworm positive but she also tested positive for hookworms. She had severe dry eye that caused vision loss and had dental disease. We are thankful she found her way to us, and we ensured she gots all the support, comfort, and medical attention she’d been missing. Read more of her story HERE.

Maxine

Maxine

Glenda

Maxine is a senior pug girl who was surrendered after her family abandoned her with a neighbor. She tested positive for heartworms at her rescue intake exam and her treatment started immediately. Maxine captured the hearts on one of our pug-loving families. She stayed with them for 8 months as a foster while she completed her heartworm treatment, spay and dental surgeries, and then they officially adopted her.

Maddie

Maxine

Maddie

This 3ish-year-old pug girl has faced many hurdles in her young life, including the loss of an eye, painful infections, and heartworm disease. Maddie was in foster for over 6 months as we addressed her many medical issues. We are very thankful for a pug-experienced family who saw past her imperfections and lovingly welcomed her into their home.

Loco

Maxine

Maddie

Loco joined our rescue as a senior after his person passed away. At his intake exam he was diagnosed with heartworm disease, severe dental disease and more. Although we worked hard to address his many medical needs, Loco unfortunately passed away less than a month after joining us as his body was too weak and tired to continue.

Archie

Archie

Archie

Archie came to us from a county shelter and was a medical mess from head to toe, and that was just what we could see. What we didn’t know was that he was already in the end stages of heartworm disease. He was only with us for a few weeks because depsite all the effort and love poured into his care, his body was simply too tired to keep fighting. Humans may have failed him in the past, but we’re thankful that we were able to give him a chance to finally know what love, comfort, and care truly felt like.
